“Today, I identify primarily as a Portrait Artist, at least for the present moment. Within each piece I create, I discover aspects of myself, which adds depth to the artwork's healing significance. Take, for example, this digital asset entitled "Hair" that I've submitted for this open call. It serves as a reminder of my childhood struggles with unruly, curly hair. While my peers had smooth, silky blonde locks, I grappled with the challenges of managing my long, wild, nappy hair. I endured scrutiny and unwanted attention, with some children even attempting to touch or adorn my hair with strange objects. Through my artistic process, I confront and navigate these personal struggles, fostering growth, breakthroughs and here's the big one: when I accept and appreciate whatever "IT" is then I need to rock it and not tame it.
Creative expression, is a powerful tool for improving mental health, especially in the continuance of healing to eventually overcome significant challenges. As someone who has had many mental breakthroughs, it's paramount to incorporate creative practices into my daily life. Art is breath, art is food, art is thirst, art is emotional, art is community, art is spiritual, art is rest, art is love... When I can put all of this together into my daily practice then my soul is filled with joy.”
